Another obituary for D. C. Conway reads as follows, " Obituary --D. C.Conway. the funeral of D. C. Conway was held at St. Mary's churchTuesday morning at 10 o'clock with a requiem mass at which Rt. Rev. Msgr.M. Maguire was celebrant, Rev. A. H. Walsh of Heisington, Kan, deacon andRev. Francis Dombrowsky, sub-deacon. A ladies quartette of the choirsang the mass and the hymns, "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," and "Take UpThy Cross and Follow Me."
A wealth of most beautiful flowers arranged in sprays, baskets and floralpieces from Santa Fe officials, employees, organizations, and friends andthe large number present at the service, were silent testimonials of thehigh esteem in which Mr. Conway was held. Many present had come from adistance to pay their respects to one beloved in life. The men whocarried his casket to its resting place in St. Mary's cemetery werechosen from the organizations of which he was a member, R. L. Hogan,Thomas Savage, Co. P. M. Hosington, W. R. Monroe, C. P. O'Dowd and HiranCunningham.
The birth of Dan Conway was at Martinsville, Ohio, on March 22, 1863, andit was there he lived during his boyhood days. At the age of 21 he cameto Kansas with the parental family and their home was on section 10 inDarlington tonwnship. It was a little later that he began a service forthe Santa Fe which continued for thirty-seven consecutive years and forthirty-five years of this time he had taken a train out of Newton on hisrun south. There is scarcely a traveler, who has frequented this road, who did not know this conductor. Always courteous and accommodating onduty, always loyal to his company as well as his service class--theemployees, from the officials of the great Santa Fe system down to theporters on his train, the memory of Dan Conway will always be cherishedand no veteran conductor has ever been more popular nor will there be anywho will be missed more than he.
Of Mr. Conway's activity in the Railroad, Building, Loan and Savingsassociation of which he was a founder, Col. P. M. Hoisington secretaryand treasurer of the association says: "Dan Conway was an active factorin this association which was first known as the Railroad Loan & Savingscompany in 1896, at which time he was elected assistant superintendent ofagencies and the following January he was chosen director and in 1907vice president which position he held until death.
"During this quarter of a century, he was always faithful and attentive, making sacrifices of time and convenience to attend meetings. He was aloyal and consistent official and as a friend he will be greatly missedby his associates."
Mr. Conway was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus of Wichita, but was an active member of the Newton K. of C. council and a faithfulmember of St. Mary's Church, and the virtues and strength of hisChristian character were evidenced to those ministering to him in thelast eight weeks of an illness that occasioned intense suffering. Hemade a brave struggle to regain health but had that peace of perfectreconcilement to the will of God.
It was on January 7, 1891 at Pueblo, Colorado that Dan C. Conway wasunited in marriage to Miss Mamie Birrer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. AnthonyBirrer and in the family circle besides his wife are left to mourn hisloss, his son, **Edward of Cincinnati, daughter, Isabelle, and sons, LeoD., Camillus and William of Newton, his brothers Frank, who is aprominently known conductor on the Wichita and Western road, and whosehome is in Wichita and Will who for many years was a conductor on theSanta Fe and sisters Joanna and Dottie of Newton and he also had a littlegrandson, Camillus Conway, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Conway.

Always thoughtful and kind to those in trouble or sorrowing, his manyacts of kindness have extended far and hear and so unostentatious havebeen these acts, that it is doubtful if many but those benefited by hisgenerosity have really known of his many deeds of goodness. As a citizenhe was ready at all times to do this share in any project or promotionfor the best interests of the community (Conway.doc 22).
