James "Harry" Leahy, 82, founder of a petroleum company that helped heat
thousands of Chicago homes and hundreds of Chicago landmarks, died of
congestive heart failure Tuesday, June 27, in his Lake Forest home. Mr. Leahy, a
native of Chicago, started working to help support his family after his father died
when he was 11. He spent his summers in New Jersey, where he worked in his
grandfather's rag factory. Mr. Leahy enlisted in the Army in 1940. A captain for the
33rd Division, he served in the Philippines, New Guinea and Japan, earning a
Bronze Star for valor in 1945. While in the Army, Mr. Leahy took notice of the oil
tankers and vowed to get into the oil business when he returned to Chicago. He
founded Leahy-Wolf Petroleum Co. in 1947. The company became known locally
through its kelly-green oil trucks. "He was one of those straight-up kind of guys,"
said his daughter Sheila Leahy. "He felt a strong duty to his family, his country
and God." Mr. Leahy married his business partner's daughter in 1948. He retired
about 15 years ago. Mr. Leahy was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Wolf
Leahy. Other survivors include three sons, James, Michael and Kenneth; two
other daughters, Patricia Leahy and Noreen Leahy; a sister, Rita Leahy Zorn;
seven grandchildren; and a great-grandson. A memorial service will be held at 10

1900 census shows immigrated 1887 and living in twp 6 Chickasaw Nation Ok. Elizas notes has came to US 5/1889/
Originally told.....by daughter Theresa
Moved family from Ireland to the US about 1893-4. All but last child born in Ireland. Last child born in Overbrook (near Ardmore)Ok Indian Territory in 1895. Family moved to Shawnee Ok where children attended school and some later Ok Univ.Mike died when last child was only 9 1/2 years old. Worked for the Railroad. Died while working for railroad of an accident. The OKC(near Moore) rail yard is named Flynn yard(8401 S Eastern). It runs for old Santa Fe(now BNSF) from Ks to Gainesville Tx. Suspicion the Flynns came to US via Canada, as dont find in NY records.
However.......we now find from 1900 census shows they immigrated 1887 and had 2 children b in Us...Lillie in Tx and theresa in OK IT. Also now question of 3rd child Annie b in US.
None of Flynn family show up in Ellis Island, leading us to believe they came to US via Canada. We are wondering about b in Clare vs Kerry Ireland..where McGillicuddys came from. Birth certificate shows Bonane(Kerry next to Cork) for Maggie Flynn. Also Pat Flynn b Bonane in LDS.
We think Mike Flynn worked probably for the Katy or MKT railroad, as this is same railroad that ran through the area and also for which John P O'Connor worked for. Son Pat worked for MKT.
notes from Eliza V Flynn say family came to US in 5/1889...but this cant be based on kids b after this in Ireland. (probably more like 5/1893...however further info in census shows coming in 1887 probably late in year after Maggie born)
Also say Mike lived 8 miles from Kenmare, Bonane, Kerry cty Ireland. The Bonane parish area also includes part of cty Cork. Maggie Flynn birth certificate obtained from Cork per daughter Peggy.Glengariff and Bonane parish
had seen somewhere b cty Clare. This appears to be in error...from Kenmare letter appears to Bonane.
Earlier thought b 1855, but found in 1900 census in Ok IT, showing with other family members and b 10/1853.possible arrival
Name: Michael FLYNN Year of Record: 1887 Occupation: Arrived aboard the 'Peruvian' Source/Event: Passenger List of Ships Arriving at the Port of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Age: adulta researcher Riobard in Ireland noted
Mike Flynn (who married Abigail O'Sullivan was born in Magha na Glaise, Cooloo (near Crinnigort), Bonane, Co. Kerry, and was Baptised in Bonane Church on November 8th 1851. He and Abigail had a son Michael, born in Coorleigh (near Gerhanagoul, Bonane) on December 12th 1878.
This does not match our church records info of our Mike Flynn who shows b 10/1853...nor could they have a son Michael b 12/12/1878...since John Edward Flynn was born 9/8/1878..making this impossible.

pic from Eliza V Flynn showed a J Flynn(looked like Jim Flynn) was yardmaster for Mo Valley RR from Muskogee.( I think this should be MIDLAND VALLEY RR which was based at Muskogee, and later merged with SANTA FE about 1932) Dr. Jim Ronda, Barnard Chair of Western American History at Tulsa University, says the Midland Valley Railroad sparked the economic growth of Osage County. Built in 1905, it began at Fort Smith and then headed for Muskogee, Tulsa, Pawhuska, Arkansas City and ended at Wichita. Blackland was one of its main stops. In the mid-60s, the Midland Valley RR was sold to the Texas and Pacific RR which in turn was sold to the Missouri Pacific RR, Ronda says.
MIDLAND VALLEY RAILROAD
Charles Ingersoll decided to start a new line--the Midland Valley Railroad. The road was to travel northwest from Arkansas through Indian Territory via Muskogee, Tulsa, and a portion of the Osage Nation. Ingersoll's original strategy was to use the new railroad to carry coal from deposits in Sebastian County, Arkansas, and eastern Oklahoma to Colorado and other states where cold weather created a large demand for fuel. The original tracks followed a serpent-like path along the edges of the coal fields. Ingersoll acquired a substantial interest in coal mines and, eventually, when the Midland Valley was extended to Wichita "to link with the great railroads of the west, [he] owned a goodly portion of the desirable coal properties."
On February 1, 1903, construction began on the Midland Valley railroad. The original line was completed in 1906.
The office force at his first railroad job"consisted of the General Manager ($250.00 a month), a General Freight Agent, a Clerk, an Auditor (over eighty years of age, who had lost the use of his right hand, and [of] a fortune), with a part time Clerk and [a] Dispatcher who worked all the time, and myself."
In 1906 when the main line of the Midland Valley was completed, the inhabitants of Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory were in the midst of debates about statehood. Representatives of the Five Tribes met in the small town of Muskogee, the capital of those Tribes, to create a constitution for Indian Territory. They voted to establish a state called Sequoyah. The proposed government for that state would have protected tribal traditions from further erosion due to the pressure of white settlement. Unfortunately for the tribes, the politicians in Oklahoma Territory maneuvered to combine Indian and Oklahoma Territories into one state, and in 1907 Oklahoma became the forty-sixth state of the Union.
Although it did not become the capital of the State of Sequoyah, the town of Muskogee continued to play an important part in the history of the railroad. The town donated $25,000 to build the railroad's shops, so the Midland Valley General Office was moved to Muskogee. The shops were located considerably out of town. The town extended the streetcar line to them and also opened the Midland Valley Addition where some employees purchased small frame homesThe discovery of oil fields during the early 1900s upset Ingersoll's strategy of using the railroad to haul coal, but the Ingersoll fortunes did not suffer from the decline in coal traffic and the increase in oil traffic. The company's line, quite accidentally, ran across the lands where the fabulous Glenn Pool and Osage oil fields were to be discovered. A branch line was constructed to serve the Glenn Pool oil field, and an independent road, the Osage Railway, was built during the early 1920s to accommodate traffic from the oil fields located in the Osage Nation. Another branch line was built at a cost of $400,000 to serve the Burbank oil field. "For each of a number of years it made net [revenue] in excess of its cost."
Ingersoll also acquired the Kansas, Oklahoma & Gulf Railroad, which had been in receivership, over the protests of his sons and Lefeber. He, then in his mid-sixties, "foresaw and [the others] did not, that rehabilitated this road would prove a profitable shortcut to the Missouri Pacific from Kansas to Texas. Within a year after [the Midland] obtained control it proved a goldmine handling trains of 125 cars loaded with wheat and merchandise from Kansas to Texas."
Charles Ingersoll was not an absentee owner and made his whole family very much a part of the Midland Valley Railroad.1900 census shows b 8/1882 vs 8/1881
may have died in Cal. trip by drowning in ocean.
notes from sister Theresa thought she was 43 when she died vs 31. Death date from cemetery records at Shawnee.
1900 census shows what appears to be b 9/1885
1900 census says b in TX... living in Chickasaw Nation Ok IT at time with family. Shows b 3/1890. Info from sister had born in Kerry. since family came to US in late 1887 pr b in Tx

in 1910 census Annie is not listed with the family

Also wonder if not dead before 1900...however shows buried with Flynns in Calvary Shawnee Ok. This date also is same date of death of Annie Sullivan......which may be confused. Since she is not in Okla census, probably dead, but would guess buried in Okla, as she was alive when sister born in Overbrook Ok.

located on the west side of High Street in the west section of the town,

It is the same home in which his wife, Anna, lived at her deathFrank is also listed as a member of Company A, of the 57th Regiment of
the Enrolled Missouri Militia (EMM) during the Civil War. (Note: A
Christopher Trentmann is also listed in this company and regiment; could
he be a relation to Katherine Trentmann?).Frank married his first wife, Katherine Trentmann, in Cincinnati,
Hamilton County, Ohio, on November 3, 1857. Many records list her merely
as Katherine Trentmann, but baptismal records of one child lists her as
Maria Katherina Trentmann. (Cemetery records indicate her name as
Catherina M. Trentmann, born 9 Jan 1829, died 20 Aug/buried 22 Aug
1866.) Together it is believed that at least four , possibly five,
children were born to them: Francis Casper, John Louis, Anna Francis,
and Mary, and possibly a Diana or Bernardine. Anna Francis died as an
infant, the same year her mother died in 1866. There is a possibility
that daughter, Mary, may have been their first child and born in Ohio. A
“Miss Mary Sprehe” is listed as a step-daughter to Anna Sprehe (Francis
Henry Sprehe’s second wife, see below) at Anna’s death in 1917. Mary is
noted in some of the records gathered by Kiel for the Franklin County,
MO, history he authored.Children of Frank Sprehe and Katherine Trentmann:
--Diana Sprehe born between March and April 1860 in Ohio (see census
record for 1860 Cincinnati, 11th Ward). Could this be the child
“Bernardine” born 1860, died/buried 5 Jul 1863, “dau. of Francis &

1874 Fire at Sprehe Home & Cooper Shop, Washington, MO ,
Ralph Gregory writes the following in regard to the Sprehe fire:
On Monday, November 23, 1874, the barrel factory and house of Franz Sprehe on
High Street were completely destroyed by fire. In the Franklin Co. Observer
newspaper of Washington a letter was published Nov. 27 that criticized the efforts of
the Washington Volunteer Fire Co. This caused some angry feelings among the
firemen and their families and friends. It also brought forth a public defense of the
firemen by one "Thomas" in the Franklin Co. Record of Union, MO. The defender
said, "It was highly unjust to hold them up to ridicule because at the late fire the
Bergner engine did not work as it should......
Apropos, while referring to the fire, our citizens have behaved most generously to Mr.
Sprehe. A subscription of $300 has been raised; a benefit at the Turner Hall; all the
timber-or nearly all-for a new house; the plastering to be gratis; and a new cellar has
been dug to assist him in replacing his residence and shop. How is that for high?"In pic of gravestone is father Sprehe, Frank Casper(referred to as Frank Jr) and Henry son of 2nd wife.
