George Warren Blodgett

Worked for Western Union as manager.moving frequently around country. Ohio, ChattanoogaTn, San Francisco Ca, and finally Texas . Was a very gifted artist, as evidenced by some of remaining pencil sketches..in particular one of dogs on hillside now in possession of his granddaughter. Died of heart attack. Called GW

Although it is not known how GW met his wife, it is assumed they met as a result of his traveling around country for Western Union, as wife was from Pa and GW from Ohio.

LDS has death as 1929? Tx death certificate has 1928
His death certificate lists b 11/22/1863 and d 2/23/1928 yet shows as 61 years old, indicating b 11/22/1867...which is our info from daughter as well. It also shows mother as named Sarah Miller rather than Emma or Eliza Miller. and father as William Blodgett. However she constantly referred to her grandmother as Emma(Eliza) and grandfather as Stillman. The writing on death certificate is recognized as daughters, and so not sure why the names are different. Notes from handwriting of Leanore s daughter June also indicate Stillman as father of George W Blodgett. also 1880 census has Stillman, and LDS entries, which also include siblings Pratt(Battie), Sarah,Chester, mother Eliza, and father S.(Stillman)and brother-in-law...all living in Hicksville Oh with George, where Leanore Blodgett said her father and family were from. Where we thought Georges fathers name was Chester Stillman Blodgett...it may actually be William Stillman Blodgett and went by Stillman. The first born boy of Stillman was named William lending credence to this as well. William and sisters Eva and Anna had all three died of infectious disease about 1861fairly close together. Probable diptheria.

In the late 1870s Western Union, led by William H. Vanderbilt, attempted to wrest control of the major telephone patents, and the new telephone industry, away from the Bell Telephone Company. But due to new Bell leadership and a subsequent hostile takeover attempt of Western Union by Jay Gould, Western Union discontinued its fight and Bell Telephone prevailed.
Despite these corporate calisthenics, Western Union remained in the public eye. The sight of a uniformed Western Union messenger boy was familiar in small towns and big cities all over the country for many years. Some of Western Union's top officials in fact began their careers as messenger boys.
Throughout the remainder of the nineteenth century the telegraph became one of the most important factors in the development of social and commercial life of America. In spite of improvements to the telegraph, however, two new inventions--the telephone (nineteenth century) and the radio (twentieth century)--eventually replaced the telegraph as the leaders of the communication revolution for most Americans.
At the turn of the century, Bell abandoned its struggles to maintain a monopoly through patent suits, and entered into direct competition with the many independent telephone companies. Around this time, the company adopted its new name, the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T).
In 1908 AT&T gained control of Western Union. This proved beneficial to Western Union, because the companies were able to share lines when needed, and it became possible to order telegrams by telephone. However, it was only possible to order Western Union telegrams, and this hurt the business of Western Union's main competitor, the Postal Telegraph Company. In 1913, however, as part of a move to prevent the government from invoking antitrust laws, AT&T completely separated itself from Western Union.

Idele (Ida) May Ross

Date of death is from grandaughter's recollection of her death while she was in late hi school. Although husband died in Mexia Tx, we think probably she died in Calif. because she later lived with her brother Harry Ross , who lived in Long Beach Cal. around time of her death, after death of husband. We also have an Ida M Blodgett death in Morrow cty Ohio 9/19/1936 (Ohio being prior home of deceased husband....with relatives there.) which could very easily be her.

Ida is NOT buried at Forest Lawn Sunnyside Mausoleum in Long Beach with her brother Harry and family
nor is her mother Gertrude Elizabeth Robison Ross.
It was thought this line was related to Harvey Luranus Ross line

Re differences of parents
Re: Stillman Blodgett/Mary R. Flint as parents
All I can find, including two Biographies, Mary's Obituary and Census Records from Putnam county OH is as follows:-
Stillman Blodgett was born Mar. 14, 1788, he married Mary R. Flint on Jan. 17, 1817 in Orange County Vermont.
Their children were:- Caroline, born 1820, married Nathan Stout. Nancy, born Dec. 9, 1822, married Nelson Hubbard.
Charlotte Rebecca, born 1823, married Orin Thompson.
Celicia, born 1825, married James Rice.
Stillman, born 1827. (vs ours b 1829...1850 census has b 1829-30 and cabinet maker...very similiar)
William, born July 13, 1828, married Elizabeth A. Harriman.
Ann, born 1829, married E. Cook.
Stillman, born 1829.
Martin, born 1830.
Also according to the Records of "Riley Creek Cemetery", Putnam County OH:- P12- RICE, Celicia, dau of Stillman and Mary Blodgett, Died June 8,1881, Aged 56Y 9M 9D (broken stone). P13- Stone says "MOTHER". P14- Stone says "FATHER". P15- BLODGET, Stillman, born, Mar. 14, 1788,
died, Dec. 20, 1863, Aged 75Y 9M 4D, Mary Flint, born, Jun 17, 1794, died, Sep 24, 1891, Aged 97Y 3M 7D. P16- BLODGET, William, born, Jul 13, 1828, died, Aug 19, 1904, Sarah Jane, born, Sep 22, 1836, died, Apr 5, 1874, Eliza A.,born, May 11, 1851, Gone but not forgotten. BLODGET, Royal N., Son of William & Sarah J., died Dec 27, 1884 at Sanatoga, Pratt Co Kansas, Aged 20Y 1M 9D.
There is no mention anywhere of any other wife or children. It is believed that the first 3 children were born in the Ascott area of Quebec Canada. They had moved to Putnam Co. OH before my ggradfather William was born.

Granddaughter Leonore Blodgett Costello, remembers and knew him as Chester Stillman, in my notes from 1970's.Emma(Eliza M) was grandmothers name. She called him STILLMAN. She also remembers cousin Barrett Blodgett, who definitely is descendant of Permit and Chester Blodgett. Granddaughter Leonore Blodgett Costello information, from memory, letters, cousins etc. indicate her gr grandparents were Permit Allen and Chester Stillman Blodgett. The other Chester and Mary Flint Blodgetts son named Stillman has wrong birth year of 1828 vs 1829 and other various facts indicate not same Stillman. 1880 census shows Stillman Blodgetts parents both born in NY (indicating not the Vt parents ...but also not the Chester and Permit parents b in CT???)

1830 census Canaan, Wayne cty Oh, indicate parents as Chester Blodgett and Permit Allen although someone has a Mary Flint and Chester Blodgett b in Vt as parents???in error. The same Mary Flint and Chester Blodgett show later with a daughter Caroline being b abt 1819 in Tn who married 4/14/1837 in Putnam cty Oh to a Nathan H Stout. (Putnam cty is se of Hicksville Defiance cty Oh..in nw Ohio. Wayne cty is w of Akron..in n central Ohio. Monroeville, Huron cty Oh is just off lake in central Oh, south of Sandusky and due east of Hicksville)

Probably in Braintree. Also a birth record for Stillman BLODGETT (Edmond Stillman) for abt 1788 in Randolph. Possibly the son of Salmon BLODGETT & Betsy DOWNER & grandson of James BLODGETT. They are my 3rd gr grandparents. Both died in Putnam County, Ohio. Thanks a lot! would also tend to confirm, that Stillmans parents are not the Stillman and Mary of Vt.

In 1850 census in Blanchard twp, Putnam Oh, with apparent parents Stillman and Mary????
IN 1870 census shows as a cabinetmaker, with wife , Chester, Sarah and George in Blanchard twp , Putnam Oh. Cabinetmaker may be a maker of coffins??

strong possibility of William Ross b1792-3 m to Rebecca Davidson children b Emlenton and Rockland of Venango cty, he fits children born pattern as well.
