May Vermilyea

Snowstorm greeted 1885 Albion graduates

By Bob Gagen

A capacity crowd of friends and relatives filled the second floor of Albion’s Opera House on the evening of May 8, 1885, for commencement exercises honoring the four seniors at Albion High School.

It was the school’s second graduating class and the first to make use of the spacious top floor of the opera house, whose construction had been completed the previous fall. Commencement for the first class — consisting of May Vermilyea, Ada Freeman, Lillie Lemmon and Mary Markey — had been held in the “densely packed” Albion Presbyterian Church.

The two-story brick and stone opera house is still standing at the alley north of the courthouse, but is essentially empty.
