Francis (Franz) Henry Sprehe Jr
came to US in 1857 from Hanover Germany and initially settled in Cincinnati Oh. Later went to Washington Mo in 1862 and settled. Was a cooper..maker of barrels.
“F. Spehe” (yes, spelled incorrectly) is listed as owner of a portion of
land on the 1877 Plat of the City of Washington, MO, (NE fractional of
Sec. 22 township 44 North Range 1 West 5th P.M.). The 2-acre tract is
located on the west side of High Street in the west section of the town,
between 3rd and 4th streets. (In small letters: S 77 E S 45) At the
time of his death, it is believed the family lived in the home at 351
High Street, a one-story red brick structure, very plain, simple lines.
It is the same home in which his wife, Anna, lived at her deathFrank is also listed as a member of Company A, of the 57th Regiment of
the Enrolled Missouri Militia (EMM) during the Civil War. (Note: A
Christopher Trentmann is also listed in this company and regiment; could
he be a relation to Katherine Trentmann?).Frank married his first wife, Katherine Trentmann, in Cincinnati,
Hamilton County, Ohio, on November 3, 1857. Many records list her merely
as Katherine Trentmann, but baptismal records of one child lists her as
Maria Katherina Trentmann. (Cemetery records indicate her name as
Catherina M. Trentmann, born 9 Jan 1829, died 20 Aug/buried 22 Aug
1866.) Together it is believed that at least four , possibly five,
children were born to them: Francis Casper, John Louis, Anna Francis,
and Mary, and possibly a Diana or Bernardine. Anna Francis died as an
infant, the same year her mother died in 1866. There is a possibility
that daughter, Mary, may have been their first child and born in Ohio. A
“Miss Mary Sprehe” is listed as a step-daughter to Anna Sprehe (Francis
Henry Sprehe’s second wife, see below) at Anna’s death in 1917. Mary is
noted in some of the records gathered by Kiel for the Franklin County,
MO, history he authored.Children of Frank Sprehe and Katherine Trentmann:
--Diana Sprehe born between March and April 1860 in Ohio (see census
record for 1860 Cincinnati, 11th Ward). Could this be the child
“Bernardine” born 1860, died/buried 5 Jul 1863, “dau. of Francis &
Catherine (Trentmann)” as listed in the “Cemeteries of St. John’s
Township”?
--Frank Casper Sprehe born : approx 1861/62 died in St. Louis on 10 Feb
1906, buried in St. Francis Borgia Cemetery 19 Feb 1906. Listed in 1890
St. Louis city directory at 1339 Poplar, occupation: shoes. I believe he
never married.
--John Louis Sprehe born 29 Jan 1863 in Washington, MO, died 23 Apr 1945
Oklahoma City, OK; buried in Fairlawn Cemetery, Oklahoma City, OK.
--Anna Francis Sprehe born 4 Oct 1864, died/buried 12 Sep 1866 in St.
Francis Borgia Cemetery.
--Mary Sprehe ??Frank’s second wife was Anna Sophia Abkemeyer Sprehe. Born 5 Sept 1836
in Hagen, Hannover, Germany, died 25 Dec 1917, buried 28 Dec 1917, St.
Francis Borgia Catholic Cemetery, Washington, MO. The Franklin County
Marriage Records of 1864–1901, page 84, records this marriage as
follows:“ Be it remembered that I, Alexander Malthaushek, priest of the Roman
Catholic Church, united in the bonds of matrimony Francis Henry Sprehe
and Anna Sophia Abkemeier, both of lawful age, at the county of
Franklin, state of Missouri on the 14th day of May 1867.
Washington 22nd of May 1867.
Filed May 25, 1867
Recorded May 27, 1867Children of Frank Sprehe and Anna Sophia Abkemeyer:
-- Herman Christopher born 1 May 1868
-- Henry Sprehe born Aug 1869, died in Topeka, Kansas on 26 Nov 1904 at
the age of 35 years, buried in St. Francis Borgia Cemetery, Washington,
MO, 29 Nov 1904.
-- Elizabeth born 1871/72
-- Theresa born 4 May 1873, died 31 Aug 1965
-- Clemens Adolph Sprehe born 6 Nov 1878, died 4 Nov 1961
-- Catherine born 1876/1877
-- Edward Henry Sprehe born 26 Jun 1880, died/buried 20 Jan 1955. (I
believe Ed worked in the newspaper business.)Frank was a “cooper”, a maker of barrels. I remember hearing from
someone that he made barrels for wagon trains heading west. I suspect a
few of them were also made for the wine and/or beer business of the
area. (There are quite a few of the Busch family buried in that same
Catholic cemetery!!)“F. Spehe” (yes, spelled incorrectly) is listed as owner of a portion of

Washington, MO, death records of 1879-1956 as “Die 2 Aprilis 1908
mortuus est Franciscus Sprehe – Ecclesiae sacramentis munitus; natus die
17 Nov 1833; sepultus est die 4 Aprilis 1908. P. Alphonse Bergener,
OFM.”He is listed as “Frank, Jr.” in the St. Francis Borgia Catholic Cemetery
records, and so the search will continue for his parents, assuming at
this time that his father bore the same name.Note: Anna F. Sprehe born 1 Jan 1839, died/buried 12 Jul 1866 – listed
in Cemetery Records of St. John Township, St. Francis Borgia Catholic
Cemetery – no relationship to other Sprehes listed. Perhaps is a sister
or sister-in-law? Do not know names of any other Sprehe relatives of
Francis Henry Sprehe.US 1880 census shows birth year as 1835 also in 1833 living in Germantown Il..but this may be wrong person, as it is 97 miles away....????
1874 Fire at Sprehe Home & Cooper Shop, Washington, MO ,
Ralph Gregory writes the following in regard to the Sprehe fire:
On Monday, November 23, 1874, the barrel factory and house of Franz Sprehe on
High Street were completely destroyed by fire. In the Franklin Co. Observer
newspaper of Washington a letter was published Nov. 27 that criticized the efforts of
the Washington Volunteer Fire Co. This caused some angry feelings among the
firemen and their families and friends. It also brought forth a public defense of the
firemen by one "Thomas" in the Franklin Co. Record of Union, MO. The defender
said, "It was highly unjust to hold them up to ridicule because at the late fire the
Bergner engine did not work as it should......
Apropos, while referring to the fire, our citizens have behaved most generously to Mr.
Sprehe. A subscription of $300 has been raised; a benefit at the Turner Hall; all the
timber-or nearly all-for a new house; the plastering to be gratis; and a new cellar has
been dug to assist him in replacing his residence and shop. How is that for high?"In pic of gravestone is father Sprehe, Frank Casper(referred to as Frank Jr) and Henry son of 2nd wife.

NIEMEYER sold out to his partners in 1860, who now traded the machinery of the saw-mill to Anton ALBERS, and B. DUMSTORFF, erected a granary and engine house, and purchased a new and larger engine. LAMPEN sold out to Dr. KLEINEKORTE in 1866, who had his brother-in-law, G. OTKE, to manage the business till May 1st, 1869, when KLEINEKORTE died. Henry USSELMANN, Franz SPREHE, and Mrs. KLEINEKORTE rented the mill from the administrator of KLEINEKORTE’s estate, and took in Henry SCHURMANN to superintend, until November 10th, 1869, when USSELMANN, SPREHE, and SCHURMANN became the purchasers. This company made extensive repairs and improvements in the years 1871 and 1872. USSELMANN died Sept. 28th, 1878. The mill was put up for sale, and bought by SPREHE and SCHURMANN, January 19th, 1879, who had many changes and improvements made, particularly to the main building, and run the mill very successfully until the twenty-third of December, 1880, when SPREHE died. XXXXIt became necessary again to offer the mill for sale, and on the 23rd of April, 1881, the same was sold by special administrator to the present owner, who is now (July, 1881) undertaking the largest change ever made in the same, by changing it to a gradual reduction on the Jonathan Mill system.
The mill building now is fifty-two by sixty feet, is five stories high, with a flat iron roof, and has ninety-horse power engine, 7 Jonathan Mills machines, 1 Mills bran machine, 4 rolls, 4 run of burrs, 27 reels, 6 purifiers, and 2 bran dusters.

It was on July 25, 1833, that twelve Catholic families left their homes at Osterkappeln and Belm, in Hanover,, Germany, and resolved to form a German settlement in Illinois. When they reached St. Louis, they waited many days for the boat that was to take them up the Illinois river. Finally, impatient at the delay, they boarded a boat that was ready to sail up the Missouri river. They settled at Washington Mo. The twelve families were those of Gerhard Trentmann, Frederick Bleckmann, Frederick Riegel, John Koenig, Adolph Schmertmann, Gerhard Uhlenbrock, Rudolph Uhlenbrock, John Henry Buhr, Herman Schwegmann, Wilhelm Weber, John Edelbrock, and John Hustermann.(from St Francis Borgia history of Washington MO)
