Capt Kenneth Woodbridge Donnell USCG

Had a career in coast guard as a Civil Engineer, retiring as a Captain(same as admiral in navy)

Involved with introduction and use of LORAN for which he was awarded Legion of Merit award.
The Command Unit of the Coast Guard Construction Detachments of the Pacific Ocean areas (Unit 203) was organized to direct field operations of Construction Detachments A, B, and D, and maintain liaison with CinPac & CincPoa USN, therefore its headquarters were first at Honolulu, Hawaii, and then at Guam. Lt. Comdr. John F. Martin was the first commanding officer, and on 17 September, 1944, was relieved by Lt. Comdr. (later Commander) Kenneth W. Donnell, who completed the program in the Pacific.

With a change of headquarters of Commander in Chief Pacific (CincPac) and Commander-in-Chief Ocean Area (CincPoa) from Pearl Harbor to Guam at the beginning of 1945, the Coast Guard moved its Command Unit #203 to Guam. It will be recalled that this unit was responsible for Loran construction. This unit, then commanded by Lieutenant Commander K. W. Donnell, was made operationally responsible to Commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean Area, and Commander in Chief, Southwest Pacific Area, and was itself responsible for the movement and operation of the three construction detachments, the plane, Menkar, the Advance Base Staging Detachment, and the Charting Element (which issued temporary Loran charts in advance of stations becoming operative). All matters of design, siting, and supervision of construction, and the testing of stations in the Pacific were also the responsibility of this unit

Gladys Juanita Brockman

I never really thought about it but yes, Jim's mom was considerably
younger than his dad. She was born 6 July 1915; she just turned 89.
She's in a retirement home on Long Beach Blvd. in LB and has early stage
Alzheimer's. Kenneth lived on Redondo Street. Jim and I were in Long
Beach three times since Mid-March. (Jim's also been several times by
himself.) I think of you when we go by the Zen Monastery at the corner of
Redondo and Ocean Blvd. (I believe that you told me your in-laws family
once owned that house.) It was apparently something Catholic at one
point since there's still a large statue of the Blessed Mother on part of
the front grounds. A little odd to see at a Zen place but it's a very
nice statue. I'm guessing they preserved it as a work of art.

Gladys Juanita Donnell slipped quietly from this earthly existence Sunday, June 27, 2010, a few days before her 95th birthday. She was born in Sallisaw, Okla. - a proud member of the Cherokee Tribe. She joined the Coast Guard during World War II and there met her husband-to-be, Captain Kenneth W. Donnell. They had been married 22 years at the time of his death in 1968. During her working life she was a Coast Guard supply officer, high school teacher/nutritionist and real estate broker. Her gracious and easy-going manner brought joy to those around her. "Nita" didn''t have a large family but Jim and Rosemary want to thank the staff at Bayside Care Center, who became her extended family during her stay over the last five years. A special thanks to her favorite nurses - you know who you are. Also thanks to Mark Ward, M.D., Nurse Practitioner, Karen Pearson and Hospice Partners of the Central Coast for their compassionate care. A deep bow of gratitude to her massage therapist, Janice Czirban - your gentle touch gave Mom a lot of comfort and enjoyment in her last years. Gladys is survived by her loving son, James and devoted daughter-in-law, Rosemary; step-grandchildren Sarah (Scholtes) Brehmer and Renee (Scholtes) Arias; three step-great grandsons; and one step-great granddaughter. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her mother, Sally Harling; brother, Jim; and son, Kenneth W. Donnell Jr. Cremation has taken place and interment of her ashes at her husband''s grave at Arlington National Cemetery will take place at a later date. Benedict-Rettey Mortuary 772-7392 Morro Bay
