Paul James Glass

GLASS -- Paul James By Staff Reports Published: 12/13/2005 3:30 AM Last Modified: 12/13/2005 3:30 AM GLASS -- Paul James, son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, was born May 30, 1922 in Wichita, KS. His father, William Robert "W.R." Glass, was a well-respected attorney and his mother, Celeste Gillis Glass, a loving mother who raised 10 children. Paul grew up as "one of those Glass boys" living in the family home on Pershing Street. As with all the Glass children, he attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic School and East High in Wichita, and was known as an excellent student, avid baseball player and devoted Altar Boy. From an early age, Paul was ambitious. He always had a part time job at the grocery or gas station so he could look after himself. World War II was starting and Paul went to work at Beech Aircraft, before enlisting in the Air Corps. Also working at Beech Aircraft was Emily Francis Braunagel, with whom he would spend the rest of his life. Paul was ordered to serve with his crew of the 14th Air Force in the China-Burma-India Theatres. He was the ball gunner on a B-24 bomber, the "Ugly Duckling", completing over 350 combat hour bombing missions, never losing his plane. Sergeant Paul Glass was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal, Presidential Citation, Air Medal and its Clusters, the China Star from the Chinese government and the Burma Star from the British government. He returned home to Wichita to his beloved Emily and they married. W.R. insisted that his children attend college and Paul's older siblings were attorneys, doctors and engineering graduates of Notre Dame and Creighton. So, Paul decided to enroll in the engineering school at the University of Oklahoma.
But he soon decided that he already knew as much as his professors and was too impatient to continue, completing only one semester of college. This was to become a life-long trait. Paul and Emily then returned to Wichita and gave birth to their only child on Christmas day, 1951, whom they named James Paul. Paul then worked for Globe Oil Company, where he invented his own method for reconditioning oil drums. This quickly lead him to start his own company which he named Drum Service Company. Ever ambitious, Paul eventually expanded into reconditioning and manufacturing of steel containers with facilities in four states. Unexpectedly to those who knew him, Paul sold his company at the age of 52 and retired - from business that is. Paul then followed the other passion in his life - service to God and his deep Catholic faith. He devoted the next 20 years to the Church, and in particular, Cascia Hall and the Augustinian Order. He was a member of the Serra Club, and the Tulsa Club. He held positions at Cascia Hall of Chairman of the Board, Chairman of the Building Committee, Chairman of the Charitable Trust and worked on numerous fund raising efforts. He was named an honorary graduate of Cascia Hall and his most coveted honor, an Affiliate of the Order of St. Augustine. On the evening of Friday, December 9, 2005, Paul received his final sacrament from his friend, and priest, Fr. William B. Perez, O.S.A. At his side were his loving wife, Emily; son, James; daughter-in-law, Claudia; granddaughter, Greer; close friend, John Condon and his daughter, Jenny Heinrich. Paul went peacefully to ever lasting life minutes later at 7:55 p.m. Paul was preceded in death by his parents; a brother who died at birth; brothers, William, Robert, Justin, Bernard, and Joseph; and sister, Celeste Hornung. He is survived by: his wonderful wife, Emily; son and daughter-in-law, James and Claudia of Tulsa; granddaughters, Greer of Tulsa, Carly Martha of San Francisco, CA and Laurel, attending the University of San Diego, CA; brother, John (Jane) of Morgan Hill, CA; sisters, Nell Riley of Joplin, MO, and Margie (Jerry) Reiley of Vincetown, NJ. Viewing will be held 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday, December 13, 2005, at Fitzgerald Ivy Chapel, 1402 S. Boulder Ave., Tulsa. Catholic Rosary will be said at 7 p.m., Tuesday, December 13, 2005, at St. Rita's Chapel at Cascia Hall, 2520 S. Yorktown, Tulsa. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 1 p.m., Wednesday, December 14, 2005, Christ the King Catholic Church, 16th and Quincy, Tulsa. Private interment. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Cascia Hall Scholarship Fund. The Fitzgerald Ivy Chapel, 585-1151.
