Cardwell, born of her first marriage. bef 1858 when Emaline was 17, she first married A. Edward CARDWELL, son of John CARDWELL (abt 1790-) & Ariminta [CARDWELL] (abt 1800-), in Breathitt Co.KY. Born abt 1835. A. Edward died bef 1860, he was 25. They had one child:2i.Mary W. (1858-)On 16 Aug 1859 when Emaline was 18, she second married Alfred E. COPE, son of James P. COPE (1786-27 Feb 1857) & Mary "Polly" HAMMAN (4 Aug 1785-Oct 1872). Born in 1826 in Perry Co. KY. Alfred E. died in Oklahoma on 19 Aug 1885, he was 59.Alfred and Emaline are listed on the 1860 and 1870 Breathitt Co. KY Censusrecords. On the 1870 Breathitt Co. KY Census, Alfred and his family were living in Jackson, KY and his occupation was listed as a tavern keeper. They are listed on the 1880 Franklin Co. AR Census Records.Alfred was a veteran of the U. S. Civil War. He enlisted 16 Sep 1862 atJackson, Breathitt County, KY and served in Co. D, 5th Kentucky Infantry. He was also a member of Co. E, 10th Kentucky Cavalry, along with his brothers Wiley and William Jackson Cope. Alfred was paroled as a P.O.W. at Augusta, VA May 13, 1865, took the Oath and released May 23, 1865.He moved to AR after 1870. This fact was recorded in the Dickey DiaryInterview with William Jackson Cope in 1898 when he stated that his brother Alfred E. Cope and his family had moved to Arkansas. Alfred served as a Judge in Franklin Co. AR from 1878-1884. He performed more than 20 marriages while he served as a Justice of the Peace in Franklin Co. AR, including the marriage of his step-daughter, Mary Cardwell to James F. Randall in 1878. Around 1885 he moved to Oklahoma. Death of Jeff Overfelt
Jefferson Davis Overfelt formerly of Paris, died at Levering Hospital in Hannibal last Thursday following a stroke of apoplexy, mentioned in last weeks Mercury, and the remains were buried from the Christian Church at Paris Sunday afternoon with funeral services by Rev. Chastine of the Primitive Baptist faith at Springfield, Ill. Six brothers of the dead man, sons of the late William Overfelt of Duncan's Bridge vicinity, acted as pall bearers and the body was laid to rest beside that of the wife in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Deceased was born near Duncan's Bridge and is survived by three sons and 3 daughters, Midshipman Ferol Overfelt of Annapolis, Herbert Overfelt of Dallas, Texas, William Overfelt, Miss Maude Overfelt of St. Louis, Mrs. Clyde Hurst of Sapulpa, OK., and Mrs. Charles Labelle of Arkansas, all of whom were here. The church was filled with kindred and friends. Old friends will be grieved to hear of the death of Mr. Overfelt. He was a kindly man and in his younger years popular with all who knew him.Jefferson Davis Overfelt
Jefferson Davis Overfelt, for many years a citizen of Paris, died very unexpectedly at Hannibal last Thursday afternoon. The body was brought to Paris for burial, the funeral services being conducted by Revs. V. T. Wood, of Paris, and Rev. Chastain, of Springfield, Il., Sunday afternoon. Mr. Overfelt was born near Granville, August 2, 1861. On January 31, 1893, he was married to Miss Annie Bryant at Novelty, Mo. To this union six children were born, all of whom survive their parents, as follows: Maude Overfelt, St. Louis, Mary Overfelt Ladelle, Little Rock, Ark.; Herbert Overfelt, Dallas, Texas; William Overfelt, New Franklin, Mo.; Anna Lee Overfelt Hurst, Sapulpa, Okla.; Midshipman Ferol Overfelt, Annapolis, Maryland. Eight brothers and two sisters also survive him. Mr. Overfelt was a devout member of the Primitive Baptist Church and a citizen of many excellent qualities.mother Annie Bryant b 1873 d 1/4/1921 Roswell NM
