Possibility of being born in Canada

I have been working on some of the McGuire genealogy of late. I decided to start with the
most recently available census data and work my way backwards to see if I could clarify
some things, especially the movements of the McGuire's. I found Great Aunt Nona McGuire
living with Great- grandma Winnie McGuire in 1920 in Broken Bow. Interestingly it said she
(Nona) was born in Montana. That seemed odd to me since Montana is out of the way between
Colorado and South Dakota -- two places the McGuires were known to have been. In the 1910
census, Nona is living with John C. Jonas and Rosa (McAdams) McGuire Jonas (her mother)
and it gives her place of birth as South Dakota. This makes much more sense. Also, Nona's
age is such that it looks as though she might have been born shortly before her father
Daniel's death or after. Sam had told me at one time that Daniel McGuire died in Flandreau,
South Dakota. Why Daniel and Rosa left Golden, Colorado, to go to South Dakota is unknown to me. (I do
know that Rosa's family lived there for some time; I have a name of someone currently living
up there who is a descendant of the McAdams also -- am hoping to get more info from him).In reading a handwritten autobiographical sketch that grandma (Stella) Sprehe had written a
few years ago, she mentions that she was named after her "Aunt Stella". Yet I had never
seen a Stella on grandad's chart as part of Frank McGuire's siblings. I figured it had to be true
but wanted to find out more. When I asked Grandma, the only thing she could remember was
that she thought that Stella died young; she had never known her. In reading the 1910
census, they ask women how many children they had born and how many were still living.
AHA! Rosa McGuire Jonas answered: 4 born, 3 still living! Thus confirmation there was a 4th
child in the Daniel & Rosa McGuire family. Stella must have been born between Frank and
Nona!!Also, I keep seeing references to Daniel McGuire having been born in CANADA!! I kept
thinking he was born in Ireland. Where I got that thought I do not know. But the 1920 and
1910 censuses list that the father of Frank McGuire and Nona McGuire was born in Canada.
Rosa McAdams McGuire was born in Illinois. Somewhere along the way Rosa met up with
Daniel in one of those northern states and they married and moved to Golden, Colorado (this
is in part supposition). They were in Golden in 1880 when the census was taken. They had 2
or three of their kids in CO. Daniel paid taxes between 1882 and 1884, then nothing on the
tax rolls. So I must assume they started heading back to South Dakota??Sometime after Daniel's death (1889), Rosa married John C. Jonas. In the 1910 census, they
answer that they have been married 10 years (they were living in Norman, OK at that point).
In the 1900 census, I found John Jonas in Troskey, Pipestone County, Minnesota, listed as a
widower with 4 children. Obviously they must have married sometime within the next year.
But I could not find Rosa in the 1900 census so far. She was not in the town of Troskey (it was
small, I looked thru the whole 4 pages). She was not listed as a head of household in the
South Dakota or Minnesota 1900 census indexes--I also looked for many of the McGuire and
McAdams surnames on the Soundex index to see if I could see her listed with someone with
that surname. I can only guess that she was living in the household of her father or a brother
or a married sister, with her children. But where? Or she was in transit and never got
counted?1880 US census shows born in Ireland

Dear Ms. Lewis:
Sr. M. Agnes McGuire (nee Mabel McGuire) entered the Sisters of St. Benedict in
Elkton, South Dakota, on 5 February 1895. She made her first profession on 22 July
1896. She was one of six sisters who went with Mother Gertrude McDermott from
Elkton to Sioux City, Iowa in 1896. She made her perpetual vows on 18 August 1901
in Sioux City. Sr. M. Agnes helped found St. Vincent's Hospital in Sioux City. She
received her nursing certificate in 1916. ( I believe this was the first year certification
was required.) She left for Sterling, Colorado in 1927 to help found St. Benedict
Hospital. I'm not positive, but I believe she remained there until 1940. She served
as the community's prioress from 1940-1949. She returned to St. Benedict Hospital
in 1950, and remained until 1956. She passed away on 9 June 1967.I can make a photocopy or try scanning a copy of her photograph if you are
interested. I hope this information helps.Nancy Sandleback
