drowned in fishing accident in Mn...per daughter
"Uncle Bill", my mother's only sibling and baby brother (and known to many as "Little Duck"
while my Granddad Jordan was still alive), passed away today, July 10, 2003, at his home in
Louisiana, Missouri. He was 72 years old.Uncle Bill always had a smile, always made me feel nearly like I was one of his own.
Summers at mom's hometown were a delight, filled with baseball, going to "Camp", cookouts,
catching fireflies, skipping stones on the Mississsippi at the riverside park behind the J&M
Grocery, games, laughter and everything else-- and Uncle Bill was in the middle of it with us.He was so much like my Granddad Jordan, too. The laughter and easygoing personality of
Uncle Bill made losing Granddad in 1962 just a little more bearable because Uncle Bill was still
here to shine that Jordan smile on us.Mother (Beverly) and Nancy, Jeni, and myself will be driving to Missouri on Saturday. The
funeral will be at 2:00pm Sunday (yes, Sunday)at the First Presbyterian Church in Louisiana,
Missouri. He will be buried in Buffalo Cemetery near his beloved grandson, William Augustus
Jordan IV ("BJ").Born May 6, 1931, in Louisiana, Missouri, to Willliam Augustus Jordan, Sr., and Mildred Alice
Martin. Married for 23 years to Ethel Mae Penrod. Survived by his three children, William
Augustus III (Bill), Alan Dale (Dale), and Julie Ann, and 11 of 13 grandchildren and 6
great-grandchildren. A veteran of the U.S. Military having served in the Korean War -- served
in Korea in April of 1951 and landed in Korea May 6, 1951 (his 20th birthday). Served with
the 2nd Battalion 11th Marine Division (artillery).
William Augustus Jordan Jr.
Louisiana May 6, 1931 - July 10, 2003
LOUISIANA - William Augustus Jordan Jr. (Duck) was born May 6, 1931, in Louisiana to William A. Jordan Sr. and Mildred Alice Martin Jordan. He passed away Thursday, July 10, 2003, at his home in Louisiana.Bill Jordan was the loving father of two sons, William A. Jordan III and wife, Candy, and Alan Dale Jordon Sr. and wife, Barb, both of Louisiana; one daughter, Julie Ann Jordan Hill and fiance, Tom Crane, of Pleasant Hill, Ill. He was the granddad of 11 grandchildren and the great-granddad of six great-grandchildren. He had one sister, Beverly Sprehe of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one aunt, Mary Jordan of Louisiana; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and an uncountable number of friends. He also had a very special close friend for 28 years, Janice Miller of Louisiana, who he cared deeply for.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Jennifer Ann Jordan; and one grandson, William A. Jordan IV, all formerly of Louisiana.
Bill attended and graduated from Louisiana High School in 1949. He served in the Marines, serving his country in the Korean War. He then worked at Tom Boy Grocery Store in Louisiana for his father, later becoming the owner/operator of J & M Food Market until the early 1980s. After retiring from the grocery store business for over 30 years, he ran for the city treasurer office in Louisiana and served several terms. He later retired from the city of Louisiana in 1996. During his life he was a member of the American Legion and Elks Club, which he was a 50-year member, meaning a lifetime member of both. He also was a member of the Louisiana Volunteer Fire Department, serving 46 years and was considered a lifetime volunteer. He was always a big sports fan of the Louisiana Bulldogs. He helped for many years running the time clock during the football games and also kept the scores during track meets. He attended all his children's and grandchildren's games, even the games his family didn't even play in. You might even see Bill at three different baseball games in one night-Louisiana, Pleasant Hill and some other town.
Bill enjoyed fishing, hunting (deer, ducks, geese and coyote), playing golf, which he did hit a hole in one several years ago. He liked playing pitch with his friends at the Elks and playing liars poker on Tuesday nights at Springer Feed Store in Pleasant Hill, Ill. Our father was also the first person to drive through the Mercantile Bank drive-up window in Louisiana.
To Bill's friends he was better known as "Duck." He didn't know a stranger. And, if you knew our loving father you would know just how special he was. He loved his family and would do anything for anyone. He will be sadly missed by all of us and we can't express enough on how wonderful he truly was.
Visitation was from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. July 12, at Sterne Funeral Home. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 13, at the First Presbyterian Church in Louisiana. Burial was at the Jordan-Buffalo Cemetery, with the Rev. Randall Cone officiating.
