Hi, all,

Today I received a copy of the obituary of Margaret Devlin, great-grandmother of my own
dear grandfather, Francis Louis Sprehe.

Margaret was born in County Roscommon, Ireland, according to the obituary. This is the first
hard information I have found to support the note that Grandad had in his papers that said
"John Devlin and Margaret Dillon, born in County Roscommon, Province of Connaught,
Ireland, married there about 1844
came to America about 1847"

So, when I travel to Ireland in May I hope to check out info about County Roscommon --
hopefully I should actually know even more before going.

Don't have time to re-type the obit right now, but it gives info as to when John Devlin died and
where, names of two of Margaret Devlin's sisters, names and addresses of her two daughters
at the time of her death, the cemetery where she was buried, the name of the catholic church
which she was a member of, and the fact that she had 32 grandchildren and 3
great-grandchildren at her death.

Also, they went to Canada first!!!! Before coming to the USA! I surely did not know that!

Love to all,
Mary

St John Gaulbert Catholic church Johnstown Pa

The Johnstown Pa flood of 1889 shows a MELISSA DEVLIN, age 12 of E conemaugh Pa,..body never found.

Based on will of wife Margaret.....John Devlin was dead before her death in 1901. In viewing the 1880 census, he seems to have died before 1880 also.

Father may be named Francis DEVLIN, as 1880 census shows a person of this name living in E Conemaugh, Cambria cty Pa b 1808 in Ireland.

Charity Ellen Coleman

have seen references to birth also in 1836. same source thought as follows:
Charity Ellen and Joseph Oster children were Charles, Elizabeth, Eva, Margaret. Then Oster died she remarried
Charity Ellen and Joseph Long children Blanche, Florence and Josie. Joseph Long s niece was Mary Elsie Long married to Charity Ellens brother Silas A Coleman. Thought possibly that these Longs also related to their mother Elizabeth J Long.

in 1850 census in Hanno twp Lee cty Il

Mrs. Charity Ellen Long widow of Joseph Long, died yesterday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock. She was born in Pennsylvania on Aug 9, 1836. Joseph S Oster

Have seen reference to a birth in 1831 in Canada? amd 1831 in Pa
In 1850 census CONEMAUGH , CAMBRIA CTY PA , shows he worked as mill right and born 1827

Oster(Easter)family also found in Philadelphia, and Bedford county Pa. Tracing backwards some came from Frederick Md to Pa and or Canada. Prior to this apparently from Germany.

In 1880 US census, a grandchild shows name spelled as OESTER

In 1870 census a THOMAS M G OSTER shows in Cambria cty Pa born 1845 in Pa. In 1880 census shows b 1844 living wife Carrie b 1853 in Pa and son Ralph b 1876 in Pa, and son Earl b 1878 in Pa, working as a Wey master in Bradford , Allegheny cty Pa.

Joseph Oster age 23, appears in 1850 US census as born in Pa and living in Conemaugh Cambria county Pa and working as a millright. He is only Oster listed in that census and county. In an 1880 census in Newton Ks, his granddaughter Eva(living with grandparents,Wm Coleman's had name apparently spelled as OESTER.(however O showed as D) Name earlier may have been spelled OESTER or even EASTER.
In 1870 US census in Conemaugh Cambria county Pa, a Thomas M G Oster born in Pa in 1845 shows, while Joseph Oster is no longer listed in Cambria county Pa.(was in Johnstown Pa then) This same Thomas Oster shows up in 1880 census as b in 1844 living with wife Carrie and sons Ralph and Earl in Braddock, Allegheny cty Pa, working as a Wey master. A Jacob Oster b 1824 Cumberland Valley , Bedford cty Pa son of Nicholas Oster(Easter) also b 1796 in Pa. All these Oster and many more of same name lived within approx 50 mile circle of one another. Family seems to originate in US from George Oster(Easter/Oester) coming from Germany to Frederick county Md prior to 9/6/1754(land grant date). George was b 1732 in Germany and d before 8/18/1795 in Bedford cty Pa. His father Johann Oster b about 1707 in Germany or Switzerland, and died in Frederick Md.

Joseph Oster and wife moved from Illinois back to Pa between 1867 and 1869

John Conway:
Regarding your inquiry about Joseph S. Oster b 1827—I have a Joseph, son of William Henry Oster (1770-1829) and Rachael Cormick Sill (1785-1857). I have no birthdate for this Joseph, but he could have been born the year you mention. Thomas McGraff was a son of Soloman. Soloman was also a son of Wm Henry and Rachael and a brother of Joseph. I do not have much more information on Joseph, except a note "Sublette, IL." That fits in with the info you have. I would be interested in sharing more Oster family history with you.
