Source, telephone interview withQuinton Westerhaus of Wichita, Kansas on 9/2/94Quinton also said that his sister, Betty (Mrs. James) Nebergall ofGreat Bend, Kansas, has extensive information about the Westerhausfamily.Bernadine Westerhaus told me (9/2/94) that Betty Kyle has extensiveinformation about the Westerhaus family also. Betty lives in Burns,Kansas.Bettie Nebergall reports that Henry H. was supposed to have fought inthe Civil War under General Sherman. Supposedly, he drove anammunitions wagon. She has a newspaper clipping of his obituary whichsays that he came to the U.S. with his father and sisters when he wassmall and that he was survived by a sister in St. Louis. Bettie hasthe clipping but didn't report her name. She did say that it named,Mrs. ___ Westerhaus, and believes the paper was mistaken about asurviving sister. Rather she believes it was a sister-in-law. Shesays he had no brothers.Bettie says she remembers Henry H. telling the grandkids about theCivil War and that when they slept on the ground, that snakes crawledover them. Then he would push forward in his chair and raise hisvoice to scare them. She seldom saw him walk. Most times he was inthe chair or on his knees praying the rosary. He wore a skull cap.She doesn't believe he had much to do with raising the boys. He justused them to make money to buy land. Caroline had died before Bettiewas born so she never knew her grandma.According to Betty Jane (Walters) Kyle, Henry H. sat in a "Morrischair" which was a kind of recliner, with a pull-out foot stool.Per Betty Nebergall, "Grandpa's house was on a huge lot, about fourlarge lots today. The ground floor consisted of a huge kitchen-diningarea, a living room and another room, brobably the parent's bedroom. There were three bedrooms upstairs. Of course, the privey was way outback. I think there may have been a barn later. There was also thetraditional cave under the house where food was kept cool."1860 Federal Census of Ohio reflects Will Westerhaus, Hamilton County,Ward 7, at page 194, Roll 973, part 3. It also lists HenryWesterhaus, Hamilton County, Ward 11, page 298, on Roll 974, part 5.LDS microfisch information shows in Ohio, John H. Westerhouse as beingmarried to Catharine M. The latter would beconsistent with Henry Herman Westerhaus. The records for these LDScitations are on Batch/Film# M514111, SS:1918; and #M514115, SS:1359.Found Henry Westerhaus and Carolina Westerhaus in 1850 Federal Censusof Ohio. Showed only one child, Augusta, Age 13. Henry and Carolinawere listed as being 46 years old, and not able to speak English.According to Catherine Westerhaus, St. Meyers in Indiana is nearCorydon, IN, in Southwestern part (just across the river fromLouisville, KY)The following information came from Irene Elisha of Box 183, Burns,Ks:According to the Parish Census of 1892, Henry's listed occupation was"railroader" as was the listed occupation of Henry Olberding. 1880Federal Census reflects that on June 19, 1880, Henry Westerhouse andfamily lived in Lincoln Township of Butler County, Kanas. Accordingto Betty Kyle, Henry and Caroline lived just south of the MarionCounty line into Butler County. Also, Magdaline Meyers was probablythe sister to Henry or the sister of Caroline. It is more probablethat she was the sister of Caroline, given their respective ages in1880 Federal Census.
