singer and radio announcer for WLS in Chicago

Hal O'Halloran was one of the founding stars from WBAY-TV's early days.

Hal came to WBAY from Chicago, where he woke up Mid America with WLS Radio and the Smile-a-While Crew. The 6'2" O'Halloran was trained as a singer. He had a mellow voice and a melodious Irish laugh.

Hal was known for his love for children, and was the star of WBAY-TV's first children's show, "Captain Hal." The show was the predecessor of Russ Widoe's "Colonel Caboose."

Always popular were kiddie shows with cartoons and a friendly host, such as “Captain Hal.”

“Captain Hal, the Kiddies’ Pal — that was Hal O’Halloran,” Ihlenfeldt recalled. “We gave him a cap and sat him in a chair. He had a piano player, did some songs and showed some cartoons.”

Sometimes the lack of rehearsal showed.

Hal O'Halloran...

If you are one of the great throng who listen to WLS in the early morning, you need no introduction to Hal, chief announcer. No matter how gloomy the day, or how deep the snowdrifts outside, Hal is always on the job with a cheery "Good Morning" to start the day off right. Besides being the announcer of morning programs, Hal conducts the Saturday Night Barn Dance, and on Saturday morning he has a special program for the children, "Daddy Hal's Helpers." Trained as a singer, with a mellow voice that can fill a convention hall, ex-service man, father of two children, he is six feet two inches of Irish good nature. If you should ask him what he is most interested in, he would probably answer: "Boys and girls."
