the below reflects the rough location of familes land near river in Lawrence near Old Ft Solomon.
OLD FORT SOLOMON AT LINDSEY 345
No more! This land ownership succeeded that of the Hollingsworth family. The present ownership is ascribed to the J. O. Pitts estate. Lands adjoining, across the river, are the estate of the late Raymond G. Brown. In 1873 they had been patented to Jacob Horback.
The old fort site is at the "top," sharpest turn, of the elbow bend, Solomon river, something less than a half mile west of present Lindsey, and 20 rods, more or less, below the present river bridge on the east side of the river. The "stockade" itself was back one hundred feet or more from the steep river bank.

The drouth of 1860 checked immigration and the breaking out of the war the next year gave rise to numerous Indian raids which occurred at intervals from the fall of 1861 until about 1868. The settlers were driven out, but returned, and in 1864 banded themselves together for protection. A garrison was built on the Solomon river which was called Fort Solomon. Several log cabins were built within the enclosure and the settlers lived there during the summers of 1864 and 1865. The famous little gun known as "Jim Lane's Pocket Piece" was donated to the garrison by Maj.-Gen. S. R. Curtis.
The first railroad was the Solomon Valley branch of the Kansas Pacific. It was built to Minneapolis in 1877 and extended to the limits of the county two years later. Bonds to the extent of $100,000 were issued to aid in the building. This road, which is now the Union Pacific, enters the southeast corner and follows the Solomon valley northwest into Cloud county. Another line of the Union Pacific runs through the southwest corner of the county, and the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe crosses the central portion east and west.
Ottawa county is divided into 20 townships, viz: Bennington, Blaine, Buckeye, Center, Chapman, Concord, Culver, Durham, Fountain, Garfield, Grant, Henry, Lincoln, Logan, Morton, Ottawa, Richland, Sheridan, Sherman and Stanton.

Feature of the program was a report on the history of the Stanton township area by Henry Kunc.

Matthew John Kane III 442-42-2023

died of cancer

Prominent Oklahoma
attorney, rancher, banker dies

Prominent Oklahoma attorney, cattleman and banker, Matt Kane, Jr., 61, died in his Pawhuska home on February 20, 1999, following an extended illness. Wake services were held Monday, February 22 at 7 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church in Pawhuska. Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, February 23 at 10 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in the name of Matt Kane, Jr. to the Immaculate Conception Church of Pawhuska or the church of your choosing.

Matt was born August 26, 1937 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, the son of Matthew J. and Marjorie (Kennedy) Kane, Sr, where he grew up. He graduated from Pawhuska High School in 1955 and attended Oklahoma A & M in Stilwater, Oklahoma (later known as Oklahoma State University), where he received his bachelor's degree in Agricultural Economics in 1959. While attending OSU, Matt became a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity which he participated in actively throughout his life.

He met Carolyn Elizabeth Conway while a student in Stillwater, and they married on June 13, 1959 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Following Maft's completion of education, they made their home in Pawhuska where they have resided for the last 38 years.
Like his grandfather (M. J. Kane, former Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice) and his father Matthew J. Kane, Sr.), Matt studied law, receiving his law degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1961. Upon being admitted to the State Bar, Matt practiced law with his father until his father's death in 1992. Since 1987, Matt had also practiced law with his son, John. Matt's other son, Paul, is also an attorney, practicing law in Tulsa, Oklahoma with the firm of Eller & Detrich. Also living in Tulsa is Matt's daughter, Tracy, who works for Lowrance Electronics in their human resources department.
Matt was a former Assistant District Attorney, and a former president of the Osage County Bar Association. At the time of his death, he also was serving as an administrative law judge for the Child Support Enforcement division of the Oklahoma State Department of Human Services.

Although Matt's accomplishments in law were indeed impressive, Matt's first love was his cattle ranch, located west of Pawhuska. He began working on cattle ranches as a young boy. From that point on, Matt spent every free moment that he was able within the hills of Osage County, which he held so dear. He was a former president of the Osage County Cattlemen's Association and conducted extensive ranching operations in Osage and Kay
counties in Oklahoma. He also owned and managed a cattle growth lot in Kansas for a time.
Like his grandmother, Maybelle Kennedy (who was appointed by President Harry S. Truman as Assistant Secretary of the U. S. Treasury), Matt was actively involved in the Democratic political party in Osage County and on a statewide basis. Matt and his wife Carolyn were active members of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Matt was also a former president of the Pawhuska Golf & Country Club's Board of Directors; a former Trustee to his local lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks #2542; a director of the Barnsdall State Bank; an advisory director to the Exchange Bank of Skiatook, Oklahoma; and a former director of NBC BANK in Pawhuska.

Matt is survived by a large and loving family. His wife, Carolyn; his daughter Tracy Smith who lives in Tulsa with her husband Tim and daughter Halley; his son, John Kane who lives in Pawhuska with his wife Cyndi, son Matthew and daughter Meg; and his son Paul Kane who lives in Tulsa with his wife Sabrina.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Matthew J. Kane, Sr., and Marjorie Kennedy Kane.

Johnson's Funeral Directors were in charge of arrangements.
