"Bob" Huffman, an Army lieutenant colonel who survived Pearl Harbor and went on to become a well-known oil and gas attorney, died Friday. He was 88. A service was held Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church under the direction of Moore's Rosewood Funeral Home. Huffman was born May 1, 1921, in Havelock, Neb., to Stella (Winkler) and Orville Huffman. His mother died when he was 3, and Huffman lived with various relatives. He joined the Army shortly before the United States entered World War II and was stationed in Hawaii. On Dec. 7, 1941, he witnessed and survived the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. During the war, Huffman served in North Africa, Italy and France. After participating in combat in the Battle of the Bulge, he worked as an instructor and retrainer in Fontainebleau, France, and Tidsworth, England. Later, he became the commanding officer of the W.K. Kellogg Estate, part of the Percy Jones General Hospital in Battle Creek, Mich. There, he met Ruth Jane Hicks, whom he called the love of his life. She was working at the Percy Jones hospital as a Red Cross social worker. They married on Dec. 30, 1946.
