OBITUARY FROM THE AMBOY NEWS, July 1877.
DIED
Near Sublette, July 4, 1877, WILLIAM LONG, aged 90 years. He was born in Derry Ireland, A.D. 1787, and came to America in 1801, settling in Penn., where he was married, 1814, Miss Anna Rhodes who died Sept. 28, 1849, having a family of five sons and four daughters, six of whom are yet living. Mr. Long settled near Sublette in 1845; Rev. Waltz who officiated at the funeral says:
"Thirty-five years ago he united to the Evangelical Lutheran church, in Penna. From that time until the day of his death he remained an ardent lover of her faith and practices. Though situated so as to be unable to enjoy its privileges he ever cherished the church of the Reformation with the warmest sympathy. His foundation doctrine: "The just shall live by faith" was the pillar of his hope in life and at death. By his life of strict temperance, honesty, faith, he honored the church of his choice."
Thus the Old Settlers are passing away. It was a great pleasure to meet Mr. Long; his frank, friendly call which he made this office regularly once a year, showed him to be a man of candor, kindness and sympathy. His last call was Dec 21st, a warm pleasant day, and as we assisted him down the stair he said "I am getting so old and feeble, I'll not be able to call on you many times more. Good bye."have seen as possibly Michael William Long
This is what I found"William Long was the youngest of four sibling who came to America. Their father a CAPT WILLIAM LONG was born in Derry Co Ireland and was married to MISS LOGAN. Capt Long was killed in a war of 1798(lots of wars going on at that time). The four sibling crossed the Atlantic to arrive in Philadelphia on 4 July 1801(knew this from Wm's tombstone in Evergreen cty Sublette, IL)

Sublette Twp pg 256-7. Biography of William Dexter son of
Elisha and
Mary Kane.
"His mother born in Ireland, came to Canada when she was
about three
years old. His father (Elisha) was born in New York state and
several of
his people were in the Revolution. Elisha was a radical in
McKenzies
Rebellion in Canada in 1837, and was in Michigan latter part of
1837.
1838 he (Elisha or William?) left Canada, selling his farm near
Toronto
at great sacrifice and came to Illinois. On their way, they were
all sick
in Michigan where his(William?) wife died. They arrived in Lee
Co., Nov
1839 and settled about a mile East of Binghampton where they
stayed a
short time. From there they moved to May Twp where Mr. D
bought a
claim from John Dexter his uncle (uncle? brother?) who came to
Lee Co.
in 1835. In 1846, he left this place, moved to the central part of
the twp
and bought a claim of 200 acres now owned by Jake Baker.
Mr. Dexter
Senior (Elisha) died about 1858.

Ahijah Dexter was born Feb 6, 1811."Came to U. S. 1835. (ILLINOIS)" source, census?
I think that John B. and Elisha Dexter tried to get free title to
their land
in Canada in 1829 (after their father was hung in 1815). Amos
and Hiram
were married before 1829. John and Elisha, both, married in
the year
1829.
From the Book "Old Time Thornhill" by Doris M. FitzGerald,
Canada 1970,
pg 25:
"John Dexter came to Upper Canada from New York State
about 1796, in a
family group. He received lot 43, con.l, Markham as a Crown
Grant and in
1801 traded it for lot 38, con.l, Vaughan, then held by Captain
Richard
Lippincott. The eight Dexter children were among the first
pupils at the
Cober (Langstaff) school and remained on the farm until 1828
when the
north 105 acres were sold to Wm Southby Gapper, a British
half pay
officer, for 125 pounds. Eventually parts of the south half of lot
38
were also disposed of, but two of John Dexter's sons, Ahijah
and Hiram,
remained in the area. They operated saw mills on the Don, at
the back of
lots 37 and 38, con l, Vaughan."
