He was seven years old when he accompanied his parents to Fairfield County, where he grew to manhood. In 1860 he removed to Hardin County, penetrating into the forests which then covered a large part of that territory, and securing a wild tract ofland which during a part of the year was so surrounded with water that to reach his home from almost any point, he was obliged to walk through a swamp over fallen logs. In the course of time that property became one of the most fertile farms ofthe township, although it took years of hard work to bring the condition about.

Resided on the old homestead in Goshen township at the age of 78 years. Her parents, who were natives of Pennsylvania, probably of Dutch extraction, were early settlers in Fairfield County. They owned property north of Pickerington, on which they died. They reared a large family, of which there are few survivors.
