Mary (Pyle) Sharples and others were appointed in to endeavor to discourage the too frequent use of spirituous liquors, and to visit those who kept taverns in order to prevail with them to decline the business. She was chosen an overseer for Middletown Meeting with Agnes Ninshalland and Abigail Swaffer.

Former Sublette Resident, Alfred Long, Passes Away
Alfred Long, 86, well know retired farmer and a native of Illinois, died at 11:30 Thursday morning at his home, 810 Oak street,Atlanta*,IA.,following a lingering illness.
Mr. Long had been in poor health four years and had been bedfast three days. Complications incident to his advanced age were attributed to his death.
He was born De. 22, 1850, at Sublette, Ill., a son of the late William R. and Charlotte Long. He grew to young manhood in that community and was married at Amboy, Ill., in February of 1880 to Bessie Reeve.
In the fall of 1881 they moved to Marne, Iowa, and that winter he worked in the Wheeler general store. The next year Mr. and Mrs. Long purchased a farm five miles north of Marne where his son, Fred Long, now resides. Mr. and Mrs. Long retired from farming in 1914 and moved to Atlanta, residing there until their respective deaths. Mrs. Long died several years ago.
Mr. Long had been a member of the Masonic lodge more than 53 years. He was the last charter member of the Marne Masonic lodge.
Survivors include a son, Fred Long, of Marne; two grandchildren, one great grandson and three brothers, Leslie Long of Amboy, Andrew Long of Sublette and Frank J. Long of Los Angeles, Cal. A daughter, Elsie died Dec 6, 1909.
Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Roland, Peacock & Baxter funeral home. The rev. Richard P. Chambers officiated and interment was in the Brighton cemetery near Marne. The Marne Masonic lodge conducted the memorial service.

Written on the back of Ella's photo by Andrew Long: "This is a picture of my sister, Mrs. Ella R. Appleton who died December 1905. She was about as tall as myself and her hair used to drag the floor. (Andrew was 6 ft. 2-3 inches tall)."
